Hiking up La Peña de los Enamorados
This was a nice route we did this weekend. Short, but technical.
This is not one for the faint-hearted or the inexperienced. You need to have a good height for heights and be surefooted.
The track we followed is here
There are several variations you can do on this hike. We also rejoined the original track on the way back down, as we’d left some equipment at the base of the mountain before the climb. You can avoid this.
Use your common sense when climbing up and take care.
By following the track in reverse you’ll avoid some of the more vertical sections.
The Peña de los Enamorados (“The Lovers’ Rock”) is near Antequera and sets the scene for Andalusia’s version of Romeo and Juliet.
Legend has it that two young Moorish lovers from rival clans, a young man from Antequera and girl from nearby Archidona, threw themselves from the rock while being pursued by the girl’s father and his men.
Locals refer to the mountain as ‘El Indio,’ the Indian, as it looks like an Indian’s head when seen from certain angles.
Be very careful going up this one.
Only go if you are experienced and have a good head for heights.
